A BOXING gym has been helping youngsters deliver a knock-out performance in the job market.

Fitzpatrick’s Boxing Gym has been offering courses to school-leavers aged 16 to 19 that will see them gain the equivalent of four GCSEs and a coaching badge.

Pro-boxing trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick started the course last year, offering a BTEC level 2 diploma course and level 2 NVQ in boxing coaching and will see his students graduate later this month.

The 15 students will be presented with their certificates by former World Heavyweight Champion, David Haye, on Saturday, October 26, at a live show at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

One student who has seen the benefits of the course is 19-year-old Lorenzo Agatone, who has completed his level 2 diploma course and is now embarking on the level 2 course as he sets his sights on going to university.

He said: “The course has been really good and really supportive. I want to go on to university and try to become a sports teacher. I would not have been able to do that without getting this diploma, which is the equivalent of four GCSEs.

“It is good to be able to do the course alongside the boxing.”

Another student, 19-year-old David Hayne, has landed a job at Halfords after the course helped to build his confidence.

He said: “The course has been great. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“Life was pretty difficult when I was young and I didn’t get the grades at school I needed.

“Since doing this course my confidence has increased and I was able to get a job. It is a good environment to learn in. It’s very hands on.”

David Haye, who will present the students with their certificates, said: “I would advise anyone interested in boxing and who wants to get an education while they’re doing it to get on down to Fitzpatrick’s Boxing Gym.”

Paddy, who established the gym in 2001, has also expanded the courses that are available. He offers BTEC level 2 and 2 courses in sports, NVQ level two access apprenticeships, and soon he will have an NVQ level 3 and a SAFE Course for women only.

Paddy said: “When I came back from the States I knew I wanted to do something like this and give something back.

“The lads have done an amazing job and it should be a good show at the Oasis.”
