A hot Prospect for charity walkers

Prospect Hospice is still looking for participants to walk over hot coals in a bid to raise vital funds.

The hospice is inviting the public to take part in the Firewalk event at Alexandra House Hotel in Wroughton on October 28.

The event will see participants sponsored to walk barefoot over burning embers at temperatures that can reach almost 800 degrees Centigrade. The event will also include a Halloween Party for family and friends, with traditional festive activities including apple-bobbing and a pumpkin carving competition.

Last year’s event raised nearly £8,000 towards the costs of the hospice, which looks after 1,850 patients and their families in the area every year.

One of the participants already signed up for the event is Prospect Hospice physiotherapist Dorinda Moffatt, who will be fulfilling a lifetime ambition by taking part.

Dorinda, 32, from Wroughton, said: “Firewalking has always been on my list of things to do. For me it’s one of the ultimate challenges of mind over matter.

“Also, my mum used to fundraise for Prospect long before I started working here, so it’s a cause that’s always been held in high esteem in my family. When I realised Prospect were holding a firewalk, I jumped at the chance.

“Our services cost £5.4m per year, 75 per cent of which we need to raise ourselves through fundraising and events like the firewalk.

“This is why fundraising is vital to help us keep going, and I’d urge anyone out there who has fancied taking on a challenge to go to the Prospect website and see what they can do.”

Rather than asking friends and family to sponsor her, Dorinda is hoping to raise money for the event by holding a fashion show tonight.

The Feel Good Fair and Fashion Show takes place at the Ellendune Community Centre in Wroughton, and will feature clothes and accessory stalls, complementary therapies and a catwalk show.

Registration for the firewalk costs £25. Participants should aim to raise a suggested sponsorship amount of £150.
