Teens offered place on Citizenship programme
YOUNG people are being called upon to ensure the success of a community-run project which could help secure jobs in the future.
Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust is organising a trip for 16 and 17-year-olds to take part in National Citizenship Service which starts on Thursday, October 25.
Ten places are still available for the programme which will see 45 young people taking part in a four-night residential trip tp Plas Pencelli, in South Wales.
When they get back they will be working together to host a number of community projects in the run up to Christmas.
During the trip the participants will be taking part in outdoor pursuits, including climbing, caving, gorge walking and canoeing.
The activities will provide an environment in which they can experience both physical and psychological challenges as part of a team.
The programme, run through the Football League Trust, has had great emphasis placed on it by the Government and local and national employers, as well as Higher Education establishments.
Adam Tribbick, the education officer at STFC Football in the Community Trust, said: “This programme will be going ahead regardless of us filling our spaces, but we obviously want to go with a full complement.
“With competition being higher than ever for job vacancies and places in higher education establishments, we feel that it is important that young people should be looking to take advantage of this exciting programme.
“It is recognised nationwide by employers and universities and gives young people the perfect opportunity to experience the pressures of the workplace while organising a meaningful project for the benefit of the community.
“We are very excited about this addition to our education provision.
“We feel that helping young adults to improve their employability and access to higher education is important, while also encouraging these same people to actively engage in their communities.“
The cost of a place on the programme, which is highly subsidised by the Cabinet Office, is £35.
