Annie Law who has started an online counselling service
Annie Law who has started an online counselling service

AS more people turn to computers for chatting to friends, a counselling service says the internet can also be used to talk about deeper subjects.

CP Counselling is offering people the chance to discuss their problems with a therapist via a computer.

Therapist Annie Law counsels people face to face but can also be at the other side of a computer ready to type messages of support.

The new system uses instant messaging and those in need of advice can type out their problems while a counsellor responds to each point.

Annie says computers may work better for some who don't have time to see a counsellor face to face, or those who may travel a lot.

"Counselling has moved on with the times," said Annie.

"The new service enables people who can't get out of their building to stay in contact with a counsellor.

But it is never going to take the place of face-to-face counselling.

"The evidence so far shows that face-to-face counselling is the best way but because of child care issues or disabilities not everyone can come to sessions.

"It is another service and we want to see whether it is a long-term option.

"There are disadvantages and advantages.

"I think it is a case of people trying it out to see how they will get on and having the choice."

CP Counselling helps people cope with many crises, including death and relationship breakdowns.

Annie feels that some people may find it easier to open up in front of their own computer rather than go to meet a therapist in person. It also gives people greater anonymity.

"They may be able to talk about things that would be difficult in person," said Annie.

"Hopefully for many it may be a first step to coming in for counselling."

To use the service, clients must go to CP's website and log in with their individual password at their appointment time.

They then enter a virtual room and can see a clock, which times their session.

The therapist will be waiting to start typing replies. The content of the dialogue is immediately deleted after the session so it can't be retrieved.

CP counselling also offers sessions over the telephone.

Online counselling charges per session are £45 for a daytime session, £50 for an evening session from 5pm onwards and £55 for weekend sessions. For more information visit: www.cpcounselling.co.uk.

This is a very dangerous suggestion. Computers can be a valuable asset to many people but cannot and should not be used to replace face to face conversations.

surely this is just an advert for a company, but what worries me most is how tall the Advertiser's photographers are.

Is the advertiser building a legion of super-tall photographers and reporters? Are they planning some kind of super-race?

Will they be peeking into bedroom windows while we are asleep to see if we have anything to report on?

I need to know. Swindon needs to know!

I'm not taking any chances. I'm boarding up my windows as soon as I've stocked up on bread, milk and kendal mint cake

I think this is a good idea. I have received some fantastic advice and support from support boards, especially parenting ones!
Anything that helps is good news. I hear what you say Robin about it being dangerous replacing face to face conversation, but it will reach people who would not seek face to face counselling and would of slipped through the net otherwise.
