The Swindon Photographic Society has chosen the winners for its annual John Evans competition.

Named after the previous chief photographer at the Swindon Advertiser, it is a competition for photos taken within a 10-mile radius of Swindon.

The Swindon photographic society, with a membership of around 60, some of whom have been taking photographs for over 30 years, meets every Thursday in Rodbourne, and has been going for more than 100 years.

Competition secretary Nick Pitt, who submitted several winning photos, commented on his photos, including the winner Park Life taken at Swindon Pride, and the second place photo of a bike leaning against a fence.

“You get plenty of colourful characters there," he said. "I saw the centurion coming under the tree and they’re all interacting on the bench, but then there’s another guy on the right-hand side just watching life really. So there’s a lot in the picture when you start looking into it.

“I like street photography more. There’s so much you can to tell in a picture. You can pick a spot and then you just have to be patient and wait for the right opportunity or right person to come a long.”

The Advertiser’s photographer Tom Kelsey was the judge for this year’s competition. He said: “There was a good variety of images this year. For myself it’s always photographs with people. That’s always going to catch my attention more then something that doesn’t.

“But saying that there were some really nice landscape photographs and some different processes using photoshops and black and white images which was really impressive.”

Tom judged around 40 photographs over a couple of days. “I looked at it freshly on my own, then picked the three I liked. It’s nice to go back on your first instinct because you get a day to mull things over.”
