LISTED ornate gates to the Quakers Walk footpath in Devizes have now been repaired by Wiltshire Council after they were damaged in August this year.

On October 22 they were taken away by a special restoration company to be fixed and were put back in place at the end of November.

A dog walker had called the police back in August worried that the gates were in a dangerous condition after being hit by a vehicle.

At the time a police spokesman said the gates were structurally safe but had shards of plastic and blue paint on them which could have come from a trailer.

The case has since been closed due to lack of evidence.

Coun Sue Evans said: “I am so sorry that no one was caught for causing the damage but I am over the moon that the gates are back and fixed as they have so much history to them.”

The Grade II Quakers Walk gates, which date back to the 1800s, were restored last year complete with dolphin emblems which had been absent from the roundels in the gates for more than 40 years.

Wiltshire Council took the opportunity to have new dolphin-crests made when the gates were being restored, which was the symbol of the Colston family, who owned Roundway Park and the Quakers Walk gatehouse.
