A drama depicting issues related to child sexual exploitation is to be performed at schools and venues across Wiltshire this spring.

The drama, Chelsea's Choice, is aimed at pupils aged 12 and over as part of Wiltshire Council's zero tolerance of CSE and shows how boys and girls can be groomed by adults for sexual exploitation.

Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Safeguarding Children Board have commissioned 40 performances at secondary schools and community venues starting from April 13 and running to May 8.

A video trailer for Chelsea's Choice, which is based on a true story and aims to raise awareness of CSE as an issue, has now been released and can be seen below:

The production is also suitable for adult audiences and there will be performances for the general public on April 13 at the Atrium, County Hall and on April 22 at Melksham Assembly Hall, both from 7pm.

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “This is a play which alerts everyone to the dangers of CSE.

"Although it’s being taken into schools it will also be performed at a number of public venues as well, as it’s important everyone is aware of CSE, recognises the signs and can report their concerns.”

CSE is a form of child abuse which involves children and young people being forced or manipulated into sexual activity in exchange for money, alcohol, drugs, accommodation or even affection or status.

Those exploiting the child or young person have power over them because of their age, gender, intellect and physical strength.

Keith Humphries, cabinet member for public health and protection which is supporting the production, said: “This drama is a powerful way to make sure people are clear on how CSE can occur and to watch out for the signs so we can help protect and support our young people.”

Both Wiltshire Council, WCSB and its partners are aware of the risks of CSE in the county and the council’s business plan contains key actions to raise awareness of CSE, identify victims, and prosecute abusers to eliminate it.

The work is well underway, with an action plan addressing the three key strategic strands of Prevent, Protect and Pursue.

As part of this Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police are forming a specialist team to protect victims and ensure abusers are caught.

A major campaign is also underway to raise awareness in schools and with the general public.

Councillor Jon Hubbard, who chairs Melksham Area Board, said: “It’s important we get the messages out to people so they know what to look for and what are the signs.

"We’re going to encourage the general public but also specific groups including taxi drivers, hoteliers and shopkeepers to come and attend this event in Melksham so together we can work to combat CSE.”

More dates for the play are available and schools and community venues can book up now by contacting Emily Higson on 01225 713990 or emily.higson@wiltshire.gov.uk

People are also being encouraged to pledge their support to zero tolerance of CSE in Wiltshire by completing an online pledge.
