BUSINESSES around Commercial Road have reported almost daily incidents and near misses on the long stretch due to a lack of safety measures and careless driving.

In July, a seven-year-old girl was struck by a car on the zebra crossing when a car failed to stop while she was attempting to cross with her family.

The girl suffered leg injuries and the driver failed to stop after the collision. A 24-year-old man was later identified as the driver and was interviewed about the incident.

Last month Paul Richards, of HMO, had a near miss with a taxi driver speeding through the zebra crossing who failed to stop.

Paul took a note of the registration number and reported the driver to the council.

Andrew Careswell, managing director of Field Recruitment, said the number of incidents meant that it was only a matter of time before something more serious happened.

“Just last week we had a tipper lorry coming down the road at about 40 miles an hour, and if that had hit someone it would have been end game,” he said.

Alison Smith, owner of Mail Boxes Etc, said part of the issue is line of sight for drivers entering the road from side streets.
