AUSTIN Gray, 48, of Old Town: "I think there is value to a 20 mph zone.

"The trouble is it is such a straight road it tends to encourage people to put their foot down a bit. There have been quite a few accidents at the top as a result.

"With this road you have two crossings with nothing in the middle, and people are crossing all the time at different points. It’s dangerous."

DEBBIE Reay, 50, of West Swindon: "The problem we have got is there is someone standing at the crossings, one car might stop but the one in the other lane might carry on.

"It is completely blind when people try to cross. I have seen it myself and it has happened to me when I have tried to cross."

MARTIN Edwards, 56, of Woodhall Park: "If people do not stop for 30 mph limit they won’t take any notice of 20mph.

"There is a road in Pinehurst where they have put in speed bumps and people just accelerate as much as they can between the two.

"I don’t think it would make any difference unless they put in the physical barriers.”
