| Charlotte Brewer |
LITERARY fans chose their words carefully as lexicographer Charlotte Brewer took to the Arts Centre stage to talk about the Oxford English Dictionary.
Charlotte, an English lecturer at Oxford University, spoke with passion about the OED, its history its culture and ultimately its mistakes.
The Oxford English Dictionary is recognized across the globe as a comprehensive authority on the history of the English language from 1150 up to present day.

In her book The Treasure House of Language she documents an elegant account of the OED's rise from a 12-volume collection of the written word to a 20-volume compilation taking more than four decades to complete.
"How do words get into dictionaries?" she said. "Who decides what goes in? What is the role of a dictionary editor, do dictionaries make language laws or reflect them.
"The dictionary can be a beautiful but controversial work."
