Slam contestants fight it out
A POET from Leicester came out on top in this year's Swindon Poetry Slam event.
Steve Rooney narrowly beat Sonia Hendy-Isaac, from Cheltenham, in the final round of this year's event by only three points. Steve's winning poem was about a relationship - in business speak.
Of the thirteen brave enough to deliver their personal work to a judging audience, six came from Swindon.
Marcus Moore, who co-hosted the evening with Sara-Jane Arbury, said he was pleased at the numbers entering locally and that Swindonian Gill Brain had made it to the semi-finals. He added: "The quality in the semi final and beyond was exceptional."
Poets were given three minutes to perform their work and the winners of the four heats and two highest scored runners went on to the semi-final.
The poems ranged from impressions of daytime television sofa and funeral adverts to road rage, dentists, vodka and relationships.
Festival organiser Matt Holland said this was one of the best, but also one of the most shocking slams he had seen.
He said: "it was the highest standard - some of the best word play and poetry that we have had for a long time."
