The only thing I remember from studying John Milton at university is that he dictated Paradise Lost to his daughters after he'd gone blind.
So it was with some interest that I went along to the Arts Centre last night to listen to professional poetry performer Lance Pierson bring to life extracts from Paradise Lost, Samson Agonistes, the sonnets and other Great Works.
Did you see Lance Pierson last night? If so what did you think?
Have your say below
Milton was born 400 years ago this year and, according to the lit fest programme, his influence in recent years has spread to the likes of JRR Tolkien, Philip Pullman and JK Rowling.
Last night's event aimed to look at whether his work really has stood the test of time.
And I have to say, Mr Pierson succeeded where my university professors failed - he managed, throughout his wonderful sense of language, rhythm and diction, to bring Milton's works to life.
I'm still not convinced I want to settle down with Paradise Lost for the evening.
But I can tell you, I rather like Lance Pierson. If you get a chance, go and see him.
