CARFAX Medical Centre will be relocating as part of the Kimmerfields development, the Adver understands.

The scheme will eventually see 300,000 square feet of office space, along with retail and residential space, built on land adjacent to Fleming Way.

A key part of the development is the relocation of the health centre on Carfax Street, and a deal should be signed in the coming days which will allow that to happen.

Land has been set aside on Islington Street, next to the newly built sheltered accommodation, for several years but due to negotiations between developers Muse and the local Primary Care Trust it was not possible to progress with any move.

The latest news comes after it was announced on Friday that Muse has started the marketing process to find tenants for the office space in phase two of the Kimmerfields development.

For this to progress, the building which currently houses the health centre will need to be demolished, so the agreement is a key step.

Coun Garry Perkins (Con, Haydon Wick), the cabinet member for regeneration, said: “I believe the deal will be signed over the coming days.

“The land has been set aside for a health centre since the plans were first drawn up but it was a case of the developer and PCT talking to decide what was needed and what could be built within budget.

“It has been a case of deciding what type of services will be on offer in the centre based around need in Swindon but that is now nearing completion.

“The talks have not been holding anything up but this is very positive and means everything can move forward. It will also be much better than having the bare ground which is currently there.”

Phase one of the Kimmerfields development was the building of the sheltered accommodation, along with the new multi-storey car park. The health centre will be the final part of this first phase.

Coun Perkins said that while this agreement is the latest sign that the Kimmerfields development is moving forward he has warned people not to expect buildings to start going up for several years.

He said: “The timing of this is fantastic with the news that the marketing of the office space is starting.

“But because of the way these things work it could be 2016 before work starts.

“The offices will be designed by the tenants so they need to be in place.

“We do not want a situation of offices being built but then having no-one to fill them.

“The development will take time but when it is complete it will be a huge boost to Swindon.”
