ELGAR’S cello concerto, the familiar melody made famous by Jacqueline Du Pre, has a special meaning for young cellist Tom McMahon.

His grandfather gave him a copy before he died, and Tom has always wanted to perform the concerto in his memory, and the Swindon Symphony Orchestra has offered him that chance.

Tom is the special guest at the orchestra’s charity concert for the Prospect Hospice in Wroughton and the Swindon Goldenhar Family Support Group.

He plays with the Belgrave Quartet and the Abbey Trio, and has performed at the Wigmore Hall and at various recitals.

Tom will be on the bill on Sunday, March 22, at St Luke's Church, Broad Street, Swindon.

The concert also features two Czechoslovakian composers, Smetana and Dvorak, both writers creating passionate and stirring compositions inspired by their homeland.

The Swindon Symphony Orchestra will kick off the concert with Smetana’s Blanik, a Czechoslovakian folk tale. The finale will be Dvorak’s 7th Symphony.

The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets are available from Holmes Music, on the door, or by reservation on 01793 627503. They cost £8, £6 concessions (accompanied children free). Visit swindonorchestra.org.uk for details. - Flicky HarrisoN
