DONATIONS are being sought for a foodbank collection running at a group of Swindon shops.

The public are being asked to give generously and support the campaign, run by Swindon’s Midcounties Co-operative shops, with collections running at branches in Moredon Road, Gorse Hill and Ermin Street.

The essentials collected will go to Swindon Foodbank, over the last year, the stores have been running the collection and have been overwhelmed by the public’s support.

Paul Moody, store manager at The Midcounties Co-operative’s Gorse Hill store, said customers had responded well to the campaign so far.

“We have had a fantastic response from the local community, who have really got behind the food bank scheme and been extremely generous with their donations,” he said.

“Food shortages are a real issue effecting communities nationwide, including here in Wiltshire, and we are really pleased to be able to help such an important cause.

“We now look forward to continuing our relationship with our local food banks, and are aiming to build on the success so far and increase our contributions over the coming months.”

Staff have also been encouraged to give up their time to volunteer with the town’s foodbank.

The programme is part of the retailer’s commitment to help develop sustainable communities and fight food poverty.

Nationwide, the Midcounties Co-operative supports around 40 foodbank groups, with the donations being given to needy people.

Swindon Foodbank is based in Whitbourne Avenue. It launched in 2005 to offer practical help to those facing sudden crisis.

The charity estimates that there are one in six Swindon people struggling to provide food for them and their family.
