CENTENARIAN Elsie Forrester is living proof age is no barrier to having a good time as she sang the loudest and the longest at her birthday party on Wednesday.

Elsie, who celebrated her 100th birthday on March 25, said the secret to a long and happy life – and to being so beautiful – was “to love and to share”.

The former nurse spent her working life at Savernake Hospital in Marlborough before becoming a bank clerk.

She moved into Wemyss Lodge in Ermin Street, Stratton, with her budgie Joey six years ago.

“I’m not 100, I’m still sweet 16,” said Elsie. “And the secret to staying so beautiful and so young is to love and to share.”

Elsie spent the morning celebrating her birthday with bright balloons filling the living room.

There was music and singing, including songs such as Patsy Cline’s Crazy and It’s Raining Men, as well as music by The Carpenters.

But perhaps the greatest honour was receiving a card from the Queen.

“She was very emotional and tearful this morning,” said Lesley Pook, activities co-ordinator at the lodge. “I think it’s marvellous to reach 100. It’s just fantastic, and to still be able to enjoy yourself. All those memories she has and those stories.”

Elsie also takes part in the activities at the residential home on a regular basis.

“She loves a sing-song and she’s always getting involved,” said Lesley.

“She’s always full of pearls of wisdom too. If you’re feeling a bit down or you need some advice you always go and talk to Elsie. She can always make you feel better.

“She first came here quite a while ago now with her budgie, Joey. She was quite shy when she moved in but after she settled in she loved to socialise with other people.

“When she first came here one of the first things they said was that she really enjoys knitting.”

As part of her birthday celebrations Elsie and a number of other residents took a trip to nearby The Crown pub for the afternoon on Monday.

Lesley said: “She always like to go out and do things, and she loves a glass of sherry. We took her with a group of residents down to the pub on Monday, just for a couple of hours or so, which was also to celebrate her birthday.”
