GREEN-fingered enthusiasts at Nythe Community Allotment gathered on Saturday to show off their produce.

From tallest sunflower to longest bean, it was the first competition to be held, less than a year after the site took on its first gardener.

Just 10 months ago, the field was unused grassland which had become overgrown but thanks to the efforts of locals it has been transformed into a vibrant community project.

More than 90 allotments have been taken up by local residents and there is even a beehive producing pots of honey.

The scheme has been spearheaded by Gerry Brant, who says she cannot believe how quickly everything has sprung up.

“Our aim was initially to get 30 allotments filled in the first year but we have 92,” she said. “There is now a waiting list.

“There is a fantastic community spirit here.

“People come down here to work on their allotments but they end up staying and chatting for hours.

“People have made friends with people they would never have otherwise done. When I was recently ill people were happy to step in and help out.

“It’s great place for kids as well because they can run around in a safe environment.”

There are plans to bring further projects to the allotments, such as a chicken coop, but for now the residents are getting used to the bees.

Earlier this year a hive was introduced, making it the only allotment in Swindon with a hive, which has already proved to be a success.

Barry Duke, who is one of two volunteers who trained to keep bees, said: “When I first started out I had no idea I would be keeping bees.

“They needed another volunteer so I put my hand up and here we are.

“We weren’t expecting to get any honey this year because we thought it would be too soon but it’s turned out brilliantly.”

The allotments were made possible when the parcel of land was handed over from the council.

Councillor Dale Heenan (Con, Covingham and Dorcan) said: “The speed which this project has grown is fantastic.

“It has been great to see this former unused land get transformed into something useful and build up such a strong community spirit.

“I have my first pot of Nythe honey and can’t wait to try it.”
