AFTER months of uncertainty the Post Office says there will be a branch in the newly redeveloped Sussex Square.

The existing branch shuts down today while the area is regenerated, prompting concerns it would not be replaced, but it has been announced that a service will be available in the new Co-op store.

A full consultation will be held to decide the exact service on offer but the Post Office has said there will be an extra counter and it will open an extra 43 hours a week.

This is because while the Co-op store is open from 7am to 11pm, the counters will also operate even over weekends.

The existing branch will shut at 1pm today because it is being demolished as part of the Sussex Square regeneration project of new homes and shops.

Julia Marwood, regional manager for the Post Office, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Walcot, which was due to circumstances beyond our control.

“We now propose to re-locate the branch to brand new premises with seven-day-a-week opening and longer hours. We are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”

News of the new service has been welcomed by locals who were concerned the existing branch would not be replaced, leaving them having to walk a long distance.

Peter Mallinson, chairman of the Walcot charity shop and library, said those with mobility issues were especially happy.

He said: “A lot of people are very relieved to hear this news. They were very worried they would have to go some distance, especially the old and infirm.

“They were not looking forward to the walk.

“Now of course it will be much nearer which is ideal and I am very pleased that common sense has prevailed.

“Anything which extends the service is a good thing and is very welcome.”

Public consultation on the new branch will last six weeks and everyone is invited to comment.
