LOVEABLE life-saving Newfoundland dogs are set to dive in to fundraising for an animal charity.

The Take the Plunge charity day, organised by dog boarding company Wagging Tails will be held at the South Cerney Outdoor Centre, at the Cotswold Water Park, on September 19.

It features a team of valiant Newfoundlands from charity Newfound Friends who will showcase their extraordinary ability to rescue humans from open water.

The day will also feature tombola, face painting, games and a chance to meet Wagging Tails mascot, Bernie.

All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Hearing Dogs For Deaf People charity which provides assistance dogs to those with hearing impairments.

The dogs give vital companionship and confidence and can alert their owners to household sounds and danger signals.

Hilary Coates, from Wagging Tails, said Take The Plunge brought something unique to the Cotswold Water Park.

“It’s quite a sight to see these huge Newfoundlands diving into the water and it amazes me every time," she said.

"You wouldn’t think they could have as much speed on them as they do and it’s a crowd pleaser too.

“It is a lot of fun and really a once in a lifetime experience being saved by one of these animals. They are traditionally larger working dogs but they are so gentle with a loving nature.”

Newfoundlands are known for their excellent natural swimming ability with a strong stroke and thick coat able to withstand the icy chill of open water.

Hilary said the animals have an innate ability to provide water rescue.

“The dogs are incredibly intelligent and they can sense if someone is in danger," she said.

"They will launch themselves into the water with a fantastic speed and get to someone very quickly. They don’t swim with a traditional doggy paddle and it’s just fascinating to watch, they just know how to save someone.

“Dogs are animals that are capable of great things, they are able to save lives, they are able to help those with disabilities and this day is all about raising awareness of canine power and ability."

Newfound Friends is a Bristol-based charity which uses the playful pooches lifesaving skills to raise money for children’s charities. They have been featured on children’s programme Blue Peter.

Wagging Tails is now looking for human casualties to appear to take a dramatic tumble into the lake for the Newfoundlands to save.
