A MAN who filmed himself as he set about a group of homeless people in a 'shocking display of violence' has been jailed.

Kyle Coupe went to the stairwell on the sixth floor of Whalebridge Car Park to attack the vulnerable victims, who he knew from his time in the drugs world.

Coupe, 22, punched, kicked, kneed and stamped on the men, some of whom were dozing in sleeping bags, during the prolonged attack.

But even though the victims refused to press charges, the whole 13-minute incident was caught on the CCTV system at the new car park.

Tessa Hingston, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court that the attack took place just after 5.30pm on Saturday, April 16.

"On the top landing there have been people who are homeless, or otherwise in difficulty, camping out or sleeping on the landings," she said.

Playing the footage she said it can be seen at one point he gets his mobile phone out to video what he was doing.

The video shows a number of people on the landing, surrounded by litter, bedding and a bike, when Coupe comes up the stairs and launches the attack.

As the victims back away he throws punches as he stalks between them throwing kicks and stamping on prone bodies.

None of the homeless people appear to fight back, just backing off as he approaches, during the orgy of violence.

"He said, at one point, he was angry with these people for encouraging his brother to take drugs, but his brother is not present during this incident," she said.

"At some point he seems to have filmed himself in the course of the assault. You can see him holding a mobile phone in his hand."

She added "It is fairly miraculous that the injuries weren't much worse."

Coupe, of Walter Close, The Prinnells, pleaded guilty to affray. The court heard he had a history of violence including a fire arms offence.

In that matter he went to a youth club and threatened to shoot youngsters, including his brother.

Rob Ross, defending, said his client now worked for Oak Furniture Store in South Marston and his boss had attended court to support him.

He said he had been to the football with his dad and then had the roll up cigarette which a friend gave him and he believed had something in it like legal high spice.

After that he said he could remember nothing about what took place but accepted what he did after seeing the CCTV.

He said: "He knew every single person who was on that stairwell. They are all people who have known each other due to their misuse of drugs."

Jailing him for 15 months, Recorder Stephen Hall said: "The CCTV shows at 5.50pm, in broad daylight on level six you laid into three men, three homeless men, who were lying either on the steps or the stairwell.

"Over a period of some 13 minutes you laid in to them in the most shocking manner. You kicked them and kneed them in the face. You punched them. It is amazing none suffered more serious injuries.

"This can only be described as a shocking display of violence amounting to this affray."
