THE EU referendum campaign came to Swindon this afternoon with a visit from the ‘Conservatives In’ battle bus.

The group, who back the government position that we would be better off in a reformed European Union, have been touring the country to get voters on board.

Friday saw the bus head up through Wiltshire, before swinging into Swindon for a late afternoon campaigning stop around Liden.

MP for South Swindon and vocal ‘in’ campaigner, Robert Buckland, was there to greet it.

Talking about the campaign, he said: “Interest is building and I’m getting a lot more calls and queries from residents about the referendum, there is a thirst for information about the issues and I think it’s a great opportunity for all of us to have our say.

“I feel very strongly that we’ll be stronger, safer and better off if we stay in the EU because I think Swindon’s local economy – its car industry, its financial services industry, the number of companies doing trade in and out of the EU – means that it’s better for our town to have full access to the single market and be a key player within it.

“I feel passionately that our future lies within the EU rather than standing on the sidelines.”

A YouGov poll earlier this week showed the leave and remain campaigns level for the first time on 41 per cent each, with just 13 per cent of voters undecided.

With less than a month to go until the referendum, that 13 per cent will become ever more important.

One local voter who has made his mind up and was happy to see the bus come to town is Dave Jordan, a Honda worker who fears the uncertainty that a vote to leave would bring to his industry.

Dave said: “You’ve got to vote to stay really, it’s the only option.

“We’re a European car manufacturer, all our business is in Europe – if we pull out how do we know what’s going to happen.”

Swindon will go to the polls along with the rest of the UK on June 23 – we will have ongoing coverage between now and then looking at the impact your vote could have.
