A MAN caught more than twice the drink-drive limit has been disqualified from driving for 20 months after he reversed into another car dropping his wife off at the pub.

John Colaco, 27, of Whitbourne Avenue, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to driving above the legal limit in the Goddard Arms Hotel car park in Old Town earlier this month.

Pauline Lambert, prosecuting, said: “It is 26 minutes past midnight on June 5. Police get a call from a witness that an Audi has hit her car while she was sat in it.

“The man was refusing to exchange details and she believed he was under the influence.”

The court heard Colaco was then taken into custody by police and found to have 77 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath .

Emma Handslip, defending, said: “My client was arrested up the road. He says he had a can of lager at home and drove his wife and sister-in-law to the pub. He reversed and bumped a car waiting to get into the car park.

“He accepts he was going to drive home. He comes before you of previous good character.”

Appealing to the magistrates to not disqualify her client, Ms Handslip added: “He has a 21-month-old child and his the only person in that household that drives and works. He works shifts in Abingdon.

“He really did not think he was over the limit otherwise he wouldn’t have got behind the wheel.”

Chairman of the bench June May told Colaco: “Unfortunately we have got no choice but to disqualify you and that will be for 20 months.”

Colaco was also ordered to pay £497 in fines and court costs.
