A MAN has found himself back behind bars after stealing more than £200 of meat from Morrisons over the weekend before lashing out at a security guard and buckling a window frame.

Mark Thirkettle, 43, was on a suspended sentence order for previous theft matters and had already breached the order once, prompting the magistrates to jail him for 28 weeks.

He has a record of 11 offences against the person, eight for criminal damage and 112 thefts. After being given a suspended sentence on June 26 he came before the courts again on July 16 for further theft charges which saw him given a curfew.

On Sunday morning Thirkettle, of Hertford Close, tried to steal more than £200-worth of meat from Morrisons in Dorcan Way which saw him arrested and hauled before the courts where he pleaded guilty to the theft offence, assaulting a security guard and damaging a window.

Keith Ballinger, on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service, told the magistrates: “At about 11.20am the security guard noticed a man walking towards the exit.

"As he walks towards the door the alarms go off and he then started to run and got onto a bike. He then dropped the bag and said ‘just have it’.”

While the security guard tried to detain him a scuffle broke out during which the defendant raised his elbows and catching the guards neck a couple of times.

After being taken back inside the store and placed in an upstairs room he tried to open a window which had a safety catch on it.

When it wouldn’t open far enough he kicked out at it which caused the frame to bend.

His defence, Mark Glendenning, told the court that his client had battled with drugs for a long time.

Chairman of the bench Michael New activated his 24-week suspended prison sentence and imposed a further four weeks for the theft from Morrisons which will be served consecutively. Upon release will have to pay a £150 victim surcharge.
