CHILDREN at Colebrook Junior School were treated to a free healthy breakfast yesterday morning after arriving by bike and scooter.

Around 50 children at the Towcester Road school made their way to the school on two wheels.

As a reward teachers laid on a free breakfast of cereals, juices, pancakes and brioche.

Rob Morris, deputy head teacher at Colebrook Junior School, said: Over fifty children turned up, which is around a third of the school.”

Rob said of the children: “They were organised, they were calm, they were excited.”

He added: “I think the children just really enjoyed just talking to each other and having breakfast together.”

Dr Bike from firm Mobile Cycle Medic was on hand to check squeaking cogs and wheels.

Teacher Rob praised staff from Mobile Cycle Medic: “Initially it was just the first 15 bikes to arrive that were going to be checked by Dr Bike, but he ended up doing them all.”

“He came back this afternoon to finish them off,” Rob added.

The breakfast was organised as part of the school’s bid to win a Mode Shift Stars Award, supported by the council’s sustainable school travel initiative Swindon STARS.

“It’s an award which encourages safer travel, sustainable travel to school, road safety and public transport use”, said Rob.

“It’s a great way of encouraging the children to reflect on how they travel to school.”

The Mode Shift Stars Award is a prerequisite of the school gaining Healthy School status.

Colebrook Junior School, which teaches 157 children aged 7 to 11, is planning to hold at least one biker breakfast events a term.

In January teachers are also planning a “bling my bike” competition.

Teacher Rob said: “The children can come in with their bikes and decorate them. We’ll have a judging panel. The winning individual will win a scooter.”

Rob hopes that by encouraging children to walk, scoot and cycle to school it will help them lead healthier lives as adults.

The teacher of 16 years said: “If we put the footwork in now we’re supporting children to lead that healthier lifestyle.”
