A DRUNK teenager racially abused white people after being refused entry to a Swindon nightspot, magistrates heard.

Nitant Gurung was celebrating his 19th birthday on Tuesday and had drunk a bottle of port before going into town.

Prosecutor Keith Ballinger told Swindon Magistrates' Court police were called by members of the town centre marshalls team who said a man was being racially abusive outside the Boston Brothers bar in Bridge Street.

He had earlier been refused entry to the premises because he was drunk but had returned at 12.20am and was seen gesturing at people waiting in a queue to get in, while shouting “**** you white people” several times.

Arrested and taken into custody he was later interviewed by police. His reaction when the comments he had made were put to him was one of shock, said Mr Ballinger.

“He didn’t recall saying them but he accepted the fact of the comments and that they were inappropriate and that people would have been alarmed and upset,” said Mr Ballinger.

The court heard Gurung, of Crawford Close, Freshbrook, had no previous convictions or cautions. He pleaded guilty to racially aggravated threatening behaviour.

His solicitor, Emma Handslip, said Gurung, who was at college and had secured offers of places at university, was celebrating his birthday at the time.

During his interview with police he admitted he had drunk a full bottle of port and other alcohol before he went out at 11.30pm that evening and the first place he tried to get into was Boston Brothers.

“When asked how drunk he was, for want of a better word he said he was steaming,” she said.

“He rarely goes out, he rarely drinks and this is the consequence.”

The bench fined him £40 and ordered him to pay £40 prosecution costs along with a victim surcharge.
