A fundraiser at Morrisons supermarket on Dorcan Way last weekend brought staff and customers together in support of the armed forces.

With a raffle, balloons for sale and even a visit from a local regiment, the event was held to gather donations and raise awareness for the charity Walking With The Wounded and local cadets. Alongside the offerings for passing customers, staff joined in with the efforts to raise money.

“Some staff have paid to come into work not in their Morrisons uniform,” said Leanne Hyde, 57, Morrisons Community Champions officer. “We’ve gone with the theme red, white and blue.”

Walking With The Wounded raise funds to help re-train wounded servicemen and women, helping them to gain the skills required to pursue a new career outside the military.

“It is one of the charities picked by Morrison’s this year, but also we wanted to celebrate Armed Forces Day,” said Leanne. “We want to publicise the day and show our support.”

A visit from local cadets allowed the opportunity for a few photos and to see the efforts being made to support them – as well as the chance to play name the teddy.

“Everybody is guessing what the teddy is called, there will be a lucky dip to choose the name, and the winner gets to keep the teddy.”

“Morrisons have provided all the gifts and prizes. There are no admin charges, so all the money goes to charity.”

Although money raised cannot be given directly to local cadets, the organisers plan to fund whatever is most needed by their band as a gift.
