POLICE have warned householders to be on their guard following reports of cold callers and ‘Nottingham Knocker’ fraudsters in rural areas around Royal Wootton Bassett.

The con artists, who often claim they are ex-offenders trying to go straight, may carry fake hawkers’ licences and identity cards claiming they are part of a rehabilitation scheme to try to persuade victims to buy their poor cleaning products.

But they are not part of any recognised programme.

Royal Wootton Bassett Police said: “We would like to urge people to be vigilant. You should never feel pressured into buying something, whether it is goods or a service, and should contact police if you feel threatened or intimidated.”

They have also reiterated advice to householders to be wary of cold callers who may turn out to be distraction burglars.

“An official visitor will always arrange an appointment with you before. Our advice will always be to not open the door to anyone you don’t know or are not expecting. Always check by using a spy-hole or look through a window.”

People are also urged to refuse to have work done by traders who turn up on the doorstep touting for business.
