RADIO 1 DJ Greg James and former Olympian Greg Whyte have given Swindon primary pupils their full backing as they begin a week-long series of fundraisers for Sport Relief.

The two Gregs took the time to make a special video for the pupils as they prepare to fund raise for the charity.

Greg James said: "We are wishing everyone who is involved in the Swindon schools relay all the very best. You're doing an amazing thing. Sport Relief is brilliant, so keep doing it. Good luck!"

Greg Whyte said: “Just keep going. Just do it. Just do your best - all you have got to do is do your best. Don't worry about where you come. Give it your best shot. One foot in front of the other and keep going. and raise lots of money for Sport Relief!”

Primary schools from across Swindon will be holding a variety of sporting events until the end of the week. Each day there will be a school to school relay where one set of pupils will travel to another school to participate in an exercise and then pass on the baton. There are ten routes setup between all the participating primaries and their path will depend on the map that’s been drawn up for them. Today Wanborough Primary will be doing a four mile walk to Chiseldon Primary from Coat Water to pass on the baton.

The beginning of the week was meant to kick off with a teacher run at Westlea Primary School, but due to the bad weather it has been rescheduled for Friday. Headteacher of Westlea Primary School, Rose Carberry, said: “We were inspired at the Headteachers Conference last November when former Olympian and OBE, Greg Whyte, gave us a presentation about young children and obesity.

“Each school involved will be doing some sort of exercise whether that be running, cycling or swimming, I’m a keen runner so at Westlea we will be doing a fun run.”

On Thursday, six children from each school and members of staff will participate in a mile fun run an the County Ground Running Track. There will be around 300 people from a total of 44 schools taking part in the celebratory mile.

Andy Drury, headteacher of Wanborough Primary and one of the organisers, said: “I’m hoping this will help raise awareness of the impact that having a healthy lifestyle will have whether that be young or old. We should appreciate the charity work and awareness that everyone is doing for Sports Relief, its truly inspirational to see and it’s always better to be participating than not doing anything at all.”

Sainsburys and Barnes Coaches have offered to help by donating healthy food/snacks and free travel.
