Swimming the length of the Channel, cycling the circumference of Wiltshire and mending lawnmowers – these are just a few of the challenges that radio presenters have been getting stuck into for charity.
The presenters from Heart FM have thrown their weight behind the Have A Heart Appeal in Wiltshire.
Simon Green – ‘Greenie’ from the Breakfast show– has been hired out all week to lend a helping hand to businesses and schools around the area.
He began by cleaning tables at Swindon College.
“The most personally challenging was playing basketball with kids half my age at John Bentley School in Calne,’’ he said.
Yesterday Simon became auctioneer for the day at the 12.30 Ladies Networking Club held at the Marriott Hotel.
There the businesswomen auctioned off their services to each other in aid of Have A Heart.
Caroline Langmead, the regional fundraising manager for Have A Heart, said: “Greenie was very excited about this one as he was in a room full of women.’’ They raised £1,100 by the auction alone. On offer were two tickets to see Les Miserables, donated by Lemon and Co, a haircut from OMG Beauty salon, a laptop worth £300 from Intel, and a tour of Swindon’s Divisional Police Headquarters.
Simon said: “Have A Heart is a fantastic organisation, some of the stories break my heart. They are a lot braver than I am.’’ Simon was also hired out to M&S on Monday to help with the Food To Go van – but he was dressed as a woman.
“The biggest challenge was getting out of the car in a skirt,” he said.
Before the auction yesterday helped pupils at Holy Trinity Pre-School, in Devizes, make volcanoes.
Today it is Adver’s columnist Jez who is in at the deep end when he attempts to swim the distance of the Channel which is 1,380 lengths at the David Lloyd pool in Swindon.
The gym is also offering non members the chance to pay £5 to use the facilities for the day with the cash going to the charity.
Drive Time presenter Niall Foster is cycling 130 miles – the circumference of Wiltshire – on a static bike at the gym.
“It’s been a fab week and the people of Swindon and Wiltshire have been, as always, extremely generous,” said Simon.
