YOUNG women partying in the town centre last night were being warned how to minimise the risk of becoming the victim of sexual assault or rape, after a number of recent attacks.

The campaign, which carries the message ‘Rape – let your hair down, not your guard’ was launched just days after the latest incident last Thursday in Fleming Way.

During the incident, which took place at around 10pm, a lone female was approached by a male driver in his 20s or 30s asking for directions.

The man seemed agitated, and repeatedly tried to encourage the woman in to his car. When she declined, he got back in to his car and drove off along Fleming Way.

Community Safety agencies are now launching the campaign advising women to always stay with friends, watch what they drink and plan a safe journey home.

The messages are being relayed via Bluetooth and posters, which will be distributed to pubs, clubs and late night takeaway venues around the town.

The Safer Swindon bus was parked in Henry Street from 10pm until 2am, fully equipped with a paramedic and triage facilities, and street pastors were also on hand to spot and support vulnerable women as the clubs hosted special nights for students to celebrate their A-level results.

Superintendent Kier Pritchard said: “We’re taking swift action in response to recent sexual attacks, and working with our partners to raise awareness about the risk of rape, particularly amongst younger women.

“We need young women to be aware and cautious about their safety – to take simple steps to avoid being alone and vulnerable after a night out. Rape and sexual assaults are a serious crime, and we also want to make perpetrators aware that they will face severe penalties if they commit rape.”

Police advise anyone who finds themselves in a risky situation to call 999.

Victims of a sexual assault or rape are urged to report the incident and seek treatment by calling the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (Sarc) on 0808 168 0024.
