OWNING a driveway in Swindon can net you about £1,000 in rent a year from commuters looking for cheap Parking, according to a new league table.

Although an impressive figure, it has actually decreased by £252 from £1,176 in the last three years, according to parking space website YourParkingSpace.co.uk.

It puts Swindon as the 30th most lucrative place in the UK for renting a driveway, with an average price of £924.

The website analysed prices of 10,000 driveways available at 6,500 locations to find the top 50 UK cities and towns.

Mechanic Paul Watts, of Bath Road, Old Town, rents his driveway out to two separate people each week day – netting him almost £2,200 a year.

He said: “I heard of it from a friend and my driveway is massive – so I thought, ‘why not?’ “It is no trouble at all – I put a little ad up and had a few people come forward straightaway.

“When I go in the morning they are not there and they have gone again by the time I am home.

“I didn’t think I would be so successful as I am not close to the train or bus station, but I suppose there are a number of businesses in the Old Town area that employ people from further away who have to drive in.

“I would tell anyone who can, to do the same.”

Unsurprisingly, London has secured the top spot with the most expensive driveways averaging out at £2,532 a year followed by Liverpool and Manchester.

Website founder Charles Cridland said: “As the credit crunch has bitten commuters are desperate to cut parking costs by renting driveways, and home owners are very keen to make money by renting their drive out.”
