Meeting over village green bid postponed

A COMMITTEE meeting to decide whether or not a popular space in Walcot should become a village green has been postponed.

Swindon Walcot and Parks community group wants to gain the status for Buckhurst Field, between Buckhurst Crescent and Chickerell Road, to safeguard it against possible future development.

The council’s footpath and rights of way committee was due to discuss the application, which was recommended to be refused, on Tuesday night.

But the meeting is now to be rearranged because only one of the committee’s five members turned up.

A Swindon Council spokesman said one member sent their apologies the day before and another sent their apologies on the day.

The meeting was not cancelled at that point, but the spokesman said two more councillors did not turn up due to illness.

Coun Eric Shaw (Con, Wroughton and Chiseldon) attended but there needed to be at least three councillors for the committee to make a legitimate decision. A new date for the meeting is yet to be set.

That space, if it gets village green status, will no longer be popular. At present, hundreds of people frequent the space at all hours, laughing, talking, huddling together and drinking soup. As soon as that status is achieved this will stop. Men will come. With men, you get rules, no more picnics, no more box-socials. Rubbish will be strewn far and wide, causing people to frown. Where was once a popular ill-described space will be a lonely village green, brought high on its new status, unwanted, unloved. the reason why the others didn't turn up was they were at the presently popular space, having a whale of a time.
