DETERMINED young performers with learning difficulties struggled through wintry conditions last week to make sure their show was a success.
The youngsters performed a special show called Making It Art at Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre last Friday.
Helen Whelehan, arts project manager for Reach Inclusive Arts, said: “Young people get scared in these conditions, but they came and were amazing. It was brilliant, everything we expected it would be and they all had a fabulous time.’’ Between 150 to 200 school pupils from Commonweal, Crowdys Hill and Uplands Schools have been working on the project for over 14 year olds, funded by BBC Children In Need, since the beginning of January.
The youngsters created Making It Art, under the guidance of professionals, to showcase their hopes and dreams for the future through an exciting piece of theatre.
“The show was to tell others that we are big and bold and we can strut it like the rest of you,’’ said Helen.
“The professionals supplied the different stories with the design gloss. The young people can show us a thing or two about not letting things get you down. They know how to party.’’ .
The project ran for five weeks and was led by arts workers Isabel Evans, Katherine Lucas and Sue Welsh.
Alongside the show at the Wyvern an Opportunities Fair was held in the lower foyer.
Groups working with youngsters with learning difficulties, set up trade stands to inform parents and carers about the choices open to the teenagers in the areas of leisure, social and career opportunities for their future lives.
