A MAN suffered deep wounds to the back of his head after being glassed in an unprovoked attack while on a night out with a friend.

The 18-year-old who does not want to be identified, was queuing at the bar upstairs in the Spot, in Old Town, when he was was assaulted from behind by another man at around 12.40am last Sunday morning.

The victim, of Westlea, was treated by paramedics but was taken to Great Western Hospital as he needed several stitches in the lacerations to the back of his head and neck.

His friend was also attacked in the incident, which came soon after they entered the bar as they were enjoying a night out.

Police have released a picture to show the extent of his injuries and Detective Constable Neil Hilton, of Swindon CID, said: “The victim has suffered some very nasty injuries and the picture shows that quite graphically.

“During the assault he was struck in the back of the neck with a glass resulting in a wound that required multiple stitches.

“It was a completely unprovoked attack - he was at the bar queuing for a drink when he was tapped on the shoulder, turned around and was hit from behind.

“His friend was also glassed and we are treating that as the same incident.

“The Spot Bar was very busy on the night and they had to open the upstairs, which was where the attack took place. There were plenty of people around who would have witnessed it.”

Police are keen to identify a group of males who may be linked to the incident, who were captured on CCTV later in the evening.

One man is described as white, around 20 years old, of slim build, with brown hair and wearing a bright red v-necked jumper and sand-coloured trousers.

He is with a group of three to four other males, who detectives are also keen to identify to assist with our enquiries. Anyone with any information should contact Swindon duty CID as a matter of urgency on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
