Sacked for fraud at store

9:51am Wednesday 12th September 2001

A BROMLEY clothes shop has sacked two employees suspected of fraudulently using debit and credit cards.

Helen Clark, 39, of Crofton Lane, Petts Wood, made a single purchase of £37.99 at Bromley High Street's Army & Navy shop but her MBNA visa card statement showed three additional transactions.

These were for £70, £99.50 and £256, adding up to £425.50.

After contacting the store, Mrs Clarke was told the copy of her original receipt for £37.99 was missing and the other receipts had signatures on them which did not look anything like her surname.

She said: “I haven't even had an apology. I think it's outrageous you can't shop in a store without getting your card used by the staff.”

Store manager Graham Morgan left a message on Mrs Clarke's answer machine informing her the two employees had been sacked, she was not the only victim and an investigation would lead to full creditation of her account.

A spokesman for House of Fraser, Army & Navy's parent company, said: “There were two separate incidents in one week.

“There was an internal investigation and it has now been passed on to the police.”

The police were unable to comment on the case, as the investigation is ongoing.
