SWINDON...

1947: Lovers of music were presented with a feast when the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra gave its first concert in Swindon at the Central Hall. Charles Groves was the conductor. The concert was organised by the Mayor’s County Fund.

1957: Foot and Mouth disease was confirmed in a home-bred sow and litter of six pigs at Foxhill Farm, Wanborough. Foxhill was well known for the scientific methods engaged there. The source of the outbreak was a mystery.

1977: Thousands of people flocked to Swindon’s Oasis Sports Centre to take part in a Come And Try It Day. More than 200 were queuing at the door and about 2,000 went through the turnstile to sample archery, rifle shooting, roller skating and boxing.

2013: Swindon and Wiltshire Pride had an impressive headline act, Cleo Higgins, formerly of ‘90s pop group Cleopatra, who wowed audiences as a solo singer on BBC’s The Voice.
