SWINDON Spitfires secured a useful point at St Nicholas with a 0-0 draw in the South West Women’s League Premier Division.

St Nicholas had the first chance of the game in the second minute when Amy Jefferies fired over.

Spitfires’ best opportunity came after 35 minutes when Hayley Shipp outpaced the right-back and found Hayley Huckin. Huckin rolled past keeper Jade Gamlin but to the home side’s relief, the ball crept the wrong side of the post.

Soon after another cross from Shipp caused confusion in the box and the loose ball eventually came to Kayleigh Reeves, who could only shoot straight at Gamlin.

Reeves fired over from a Huckin cross just past the hour mark and Ruby Bagge netted for the home side on 77 minutes, only to be flagged offside.

St Nicholas had a glorious chance to win the game late on, but the unmarked Bagge rushed her effort wide.

Spitfires host strugglers Stoke Lane Athletic this weekend.

Meanwhile, in the first qualifying round of the FA Women’s Cup, Spitfires will travel to Quedgeley on September 22.

Wootton Bassett Town face Cheltenham Civil Service this weekend in a preliminary round tie to determine who will play Bristol Ladies Union.

Swindon Town are exempt until the third qualifying round.
