JOHN Fisher won’t need to say anything special on his return to the dugout to get Highworth Town fired up for Saturday’s trip to Thatcham Town.

Fisher has missed the last two weeks of the campaign after going on holiday to Turkey but is back in time for Highworth’s showdown with fellow Hellenic League Premier Division high-flyers Thatcham.

Former Southern League side Thatcham have hit the ground running this term and five straight league wins has lifted them to second in the table.

Highworth have enjoyed a strong start themselves and are just two points and two places below.

“Saturday will be a great day and I’m sure we’ll serve up an exciting spectacle but these aren’t the games that decide the title,” said Fisher.

“The lads are motivated to play games like this and my team talk will probably be quite brief. It’s Tuesday’s game at Holyport that I’m more concerned about.

“If we beat Thatcham it’s great but if we slip up against Holyport it sort of defeats the object.

“It’s the matches against the teams at the bottom that count. If we beat all the teams in the bottom half of the table twice I’m convinced we’ll win the league.”

Fisher took charge of the Worthians’ opening two league games but assistant Kevin Moloney has since overseen proceedings at The Elms.

And despite getting a bit of stick from his players since his return, Fisher is delighted to come back to a team in such good shape.

“The league is our bread and butter and I’m really happy with how that’s gone,” added Fisher.

“People have a pop for going away at the start of the season but when am I supposed to go on holiday? I’m here in pre-season to get the team sorted and then I go away.

“I’m refreshed and ready to go. The weather was good but the golf was bad. Hopefully the football will be better on Saturday.”

Gareth Davies remains a doubt for Highworth as he is still struggling with a groin injury and fellow defender Liam Williams is unavailable due to a wedding.

Shrivenham will be looking to return to winning ways following back-to-back league defeats when they travel to Binfield.

Wootton Bassett Town are without a fixture this weekend.
