A RELEIVED Dave Webb was delighted to see debutant Dan Martin get Swindon Supermarine out of jail with a last-gasp winner at Mangotsfield United yesterday.

Marine had thrown away a two-goal cushion after conceding twice in the space of five minutes at Cossham Street but teenage striker Martin, whose Marine registration was only rubber-stamped on Saturday morning, came off the substitute’s bench and fired home in the 90th minute to hand the visitors a 3-2 triumph.

Webb thought that his team had contrived to squander an impressive performance and comfortable lead and was chuffed to see Marine claim a vital three points in the Southern League Division One South & West.

“To be honest, I was angry. We’d played really well and were 2-0 up, and then it looked like we’d thrown it away,” said the Webb’s Wood chief.

“We needed three points because our league form has been below-par and there was a big sense of relief.

“Dan Martin had only trained with us once, on Thursday, and his move only came through in the morning.

“He would have scored our second goal if the defender hadn’t put it in and it was a brilliant finish from him for the winner after a great through ball from Chrissy Taylor, who had a brilliant game all afternoon.

“He’s been at Forest Green and Shortwood and he’d dropped out of football but I’m glad that we’ve gotten him in – he is only 19 but I don’t see it as giving him a chance.

“He’s raw and he gives us something different up front. We may have lost a lot of players to injury but when I get them all back, I’m going to have a few difficult decisions to make. That’s a nice problem to have though.”

Marine took the lead early in the second period when defender Shaun Lamb was sent off for a handball in the area and Chris Taylor fired home after missing his initial spot-kick.

With ten minutes to go, Josh Morse’s cross was turned into his own net by Mangotsfield’s Zac Evans but the hosts hit back a minute later as Lewis Powell struck to reduce the deficit.

With 85 minutes on the clock, Matty Collins’ low free-kick got United back on level terms but parity was only short-lived as Martin popped up with a dramatic winner.

Webb added: “We really needed that result and it’s great that we can now concentrate on looking forward to the Havant game (in the FA Cup second qualifying round next weekend).”
