SPECTRUM returned to winning ways at the weekend when they beat DJC Marlborough 2-0 at home in the Premier Division.

Despite being without a recognised goalkeeper – being forced to play an injured defender in between the sticks – Spectrum defended well to keep Marlborough at bay.

Carl O’Regan opened the scoring for the hosts with a glancing header before a fine solo goal from Jamie Clements secured all three points in the first half.

Spectrum manager Bryan Watson was pleased with his team’s response to losing to Old Town United 4-2 the week before and believes his side, who finished fifth last season, could compete for the title.

“It was a good game I think overall. The score was 2-0 but we missed two one-on-one chances so we really should have won by more.

“I think we coped pretty well with what they threw at us and we defended really well.

“Avtar and Village Inn are the top teams and I think we are contenders but we have to perform really well and can’t afford any more slip ups.”

Elsewhere, Avtar continued their 100 per cent record in the league with a closely-fought 3-2 victory over Swiss Chalet Rangers.

Avtar’s Chris Price scored twice in the first half before Scott Bailey scored straight after the re-start for Swiss and Daryl Herring equalised ten minutes later.

Shane Hibbert secured all three points for the hosts to make them the early league leaders.

It was an eight-goal thriller in the division’s other game where Sportz Central beat Old Town 5-3.

Sportz went ahead through Clinton Novaes and then Jack Duffy equalised 20 minutes later.

Strikes from Alisto Pires and Clinton’s second put Sportz 3-1 ahead before Old Town drew the game level for a second time with a brace from Jamie McCabe.

With ten minutes left, Sportz rallied again and Pires netted his second before Jose Rodrigues wrapped up the three points.

In Division One, KS Miltax went two points clear at the top after a 9-0 mauling of Core Construction.

A hat-trick from Kamil Pietrzykowski and a brace from Jakub Bedrich added to goals from Mateusz Kapustka, Lukasz Zareba, Maciej Chmielik and an own goal.

There were also plenty of goals between The Clifton and North Swindon, the hosts coming out 4-3 victors. After taking a 2-0 lead, The Clifton let it slip to go 3-2 behind but they rallied around to pull the game back and take the three points.

“It was a very tightly contested game and we should have done a lot better than we did,” said manager Carl Read.

“We were relieved at the end to be honest but it is good to get the win.”

There were also seven goals in the match between Ramsbury and Chiseldon but this time the away side were the team to take the spoils.

A brace from Ibra Jagure added to goals Matt Clarke and Aaron Smith for Chiseldon, despite them going down to ten-men when captain Vince Sejournant was shown a straight red.

After shipping nine goals in their opening two games, Bassett Bulldogs enjoyed a 5-0 win at home to Redhouse.

In a one-sided affair from the kick-off, Jason Hudson was able to bag himself four goals to add to the solo goal from Chris Edwards.
