HE MAY not have gotten the clean sheet he asked his players for but New College manager Mark Teasdale was more than happy to settle for six goals at the other end as his youngsters found their scoring boots on Saturday.

College notched up what was only their second victory in the Hellenic League Division One West this season in emphatic style as they hammered Shortwood United Reserves 6-1 on Saturday.

Harvey Scholes gave the students an early lead before Christy Millar hit a hat-trick, with Ollie Hunt and David Kinuthia also getting in the act as struggling Shortwood were put to the sword.

Boss Teasdale was delighted to see his side enjoy a fruitful outing in front of goal and is hoping that College can hit last weekend’s heights on a more regular basis as their season rolls on.

“My pre-match gambit was that I asked the players to get a clean sheet. If we got one, I thought that would get us at least a point,” he said.

“There were a few moments where we were a little bit sloppy at the back and Alex Swatridge had to make a couple of saves. We did obviously concede one but I can’t complain at all when we’ve scored six.

“We got an early goal through Harvey Scholes and that was nice because it just settled any nerves. We were 3-1 up at half-time and as soon as we made it 4-1, it was a stroll.

“The main thing now is just to try and get some sort of consistency – I’d love to see us play like that every weekend.

“It’s just hard for our players because they’ve got college work, family life and work to deal with as well as training and playing on a Saturday.”

A 6-1 triumph sends College into next weekend’s FA Vase second qualifying round clash with Thame United full of confidence and Teasdale is anticipating a day to remember for his club.

He added: “The fact we haven’t got a game in midweek means that we shouldn’t pick up any injuries and can look forward to the Thame game.

“I think it’s going to be a great day and it’s great that it’s going to be on Supermarine’s pitch. It’s a lush green surface and it suits the kind of football we like to play.

“It’s great to have that affiliation with Supermarine because when you speak to youngsters about joining our academy, you can say to them that this is where we play our home games and this is where you should aspire to be playing all the time one day.”
