DAVE Webb has warned his Swindon Supermarine players to buck their ideas up or face up to the possibility of being left with nothing to play for in the Southern League Division One South & West.

Marine have made the play-offs in their last two seasons but currently find themselves 16th in the table following last weekend’s dismal 5-0 loss at Evesham United, their sixth league defeat of the season so far.

The Webb’s Wood Stadium chief was perturbed by the way in which his side were beaten at Evesham, with Mark Flanagan and substitute Joe Shepherd both sent off, and says that Marine’s performance in Worcestershire was simply ‘unacceptable’.

“We’ve been in the play-offs two years in a row and the reality is that we’re languishing down the table and it could end up being impossible by Christmas,” said Webb.

“It’s up to me to get my players to focus on that and ask them ‘do you want to finish tenth or do you want to finish fifth or above?’ - we need to pick up points in our October fixtures.

“The performance on Saturday wasn’t acceptable for a Swindon Supermarine side and I was very, very disappointed afterwards.

“For the quality that I’ve got in my dressing room, that just wasn’t good enough and it was the manner that we lost the game that was most disappointing.

“With all respect to Evesham, we shouldn’t be going there and losing like that and with the lack of discipline that we showed.

“Mark Flanagan got booked for two tackles on Ashley Edenborough within a minute-and-a-half and once you’ve got one yellow, you shouldn’t be giving the referee no option like that.

“In fairness to Joe Shepherd, I’ve sent him on because the one thing he’ll always do is put himself about and make challenges. Their central two were overpowering us in that area but the tackle he made on their wide player was from behind and in this day and age, you’re going to get a red card for it.

“I think it looked worse than it was and thankfully their player wasn’t hurt.”

George Washbourne put the home side in front before Marine goalkeeper Sam Worrall palmed a ball into his own net before half-time.

Following Flanagan’s quickfire yellow cards, Ashley Edenborough notched against his former side from a free-kick before Harry Williams netted Evesham’s fourth.

Shepherd received his marching orders late in the game but there was still time for Williams to round off the rout.

Marine travel to Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday night and young defender Cameron Pirie is in line for his debut after joining on a month’s loan from Forest Green Rovers.

Webb added: “I’ve got no Ross Adams on Tuesday so he’ll come in for his debut. He’s a left-sided central defender and he’s highly-rated – he’s captained Forest Green’s U18 team.”
