AFTER a summer of rebuilding, Old Town United appear to be getting into gear as they secured their second win of the season with a 5-1 away win to Swiss Chalet Rangers.

Old Town got their season off to the worst possible start when they were beaten 12-2 at Village Inn, but with a couple of new signings, including James Lewis, things seem to be turning around.

After a bright start for the visitors, Jack Duffy scored within just 10 minutes to get Old Town off the mark, but bad habits that have seen them slip to defeats to Sportz Central and Avtar Contruction saw Old Town concede only 10 minutes later to a Paul Johnson strike.

Lewis restored the lead before half time and he got his second after the break before James Lewis bagged his hat-trick and send Old Town to sixth in the league.

“It was a strong performance this week, over the last couple of weeks we’ve been a bit up and down,” said former manager Chris Wood, who has stepped down from the managers role to concentrate on getting his coaching badges, while continuing to play for the club.

“We got a goal early on but then we started to show a bit of the previous week’s problems and we fell asleep at the back which let Chalet get back into the game.

“A goal from James Lewis before half time gave us the lead and, in the second half, we came out much stronger and our fitness showed to be the better of the two sides.

“We lost a lot of players during the pre-season and some of our younger players have decided to move on to progress with their football which you can’t blame them for.

“Our goalkeeper, for example, retired at the end of last season and he was the players’ player and manager’s player of the season.

“So we are having to rebuild and I think that we are making good progress.

“I don’t think we’ll win the league but I think we will be thereabouts come the end of the season.”

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Sportz Central missed the chance to go joint top of the league with Avtar Construction.

With the league leaders not in action, Sports Central could have pulled level but they were beaten at home to Shield and Dagger.

In the league’s only other game, Village Inn made it two wins from two as they beat Lower Stratton 2-0 away.

Meanwhile in Division One it has been a disappointing start for Swindon Centurians as they lost their first game of the season 5-1 to North Swindon WMC.

Core Construction got their first win of the season under their belt after they beat Redhouse 4-1 away from home.

In the final game of the weekend, Swindon Spitfires recorded a 2-1 win away to Bassett Bulldogs.
