WROUGHTON chairman Kevin Cook reckons his side claimed one of the biggest scalps in the Wiltshire Senior Cup last weekend.

Wiltshire League Wroughton pulled off a relative giantkilling by beating Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-1 at their Weir Field ground in the first round.

Bemerton ply their trade in the Sydenhams League Premier Division but were sent packing thanks to goals from Chris Mills and Ryan Keech, Mark Love’s side booking a second-round clash with Wootton Bassett Town.

“We were up against a side playing two leagues higher than us and we were just hoping to put in a good performance against them,” said Cook.

“But the performance from us was excellent. They did score an equaliser after Chris Mills had put us ahead but Ryan Keech popped up with the winner with about ten minutes to go.

“I think that it’s one of the biggest scalps in the competition. Their wage budget must be £200 to £300 a game and our lads are paying a fiver each to play.

“We’re under no illusions that we’re going to go on and win the Wiltshire Cup but we’re proud of what we did on Saturday.”

Shrivenham were unable to bring their losing run to an end as they suffered their eleventh straight defeat in all competitions, losing 3-0 at Newbury in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Collier’s men go to Burnham in the second round of the Floodlit Cup tonight.

Fairford Town’s attempts to pull off an upset in the Hellenic League Division One West fell flat as they were decimated 8-0 at top-of-the-table Longlevens, with Gareth Davies’ men also slipping to the foot of the table.
