SUPERMARINE Sports chief Peter Milhench has set his sights on closing the gap at the top of the table after a hard-fought win at Trowbridge Wanderers.

Milhench’s men finished as runners-up behind Southbrook last season but have endured an indifferent start to the 2014-15 campaign.

The 2-0 success over Wanderers was just Sports’ seventh win from their opening 14 league games but Milhench hopes they have now turned a corner.

“It was a hard game. They were up for it as much as we were,” said Milhench, whose side leapt above Wanderers with victory and are now up to seventh.

“Both teams needed the three points because we’re both stuck scrapping in mid-table. Thankfully, it was us that came out on top.

“We shouldn’t be in the middle of the table. With our football, we should be up there with the best of them but our attitude has let us down at times this year.

“But in the last few games, we’ve been much more like we were last season and played the football I know we can. Hopefully we can carry that on now.”

Following a goalless first half, Sports were lucky to avoid falling behind soon after the restart when Trowbridge were awarded a penalty.

Goalkeeper Eddie Salisbury ensured the deadlock remained intact however as he pulled off a fine save to deny Paul Gittins from the spot.

Supermarine made the most of their good fortune and took the lead ten minutes later when Adam Devine found the net with a wonder strike.

Resolute defence then kept Wanderers at bay and as the hosts rallied in an effort to get back into the game, Chris Balfe made the points safe two minutes from time when he got the better of a marginal offside call to double Marine’s advantage.

Ludgershall Sports climbed to the top of the table with a 2-1 win at home to Southbrook, capitalising on a fixtureless weekend for previous league leaders Melksham Town Reserves.

Third-placed Devizes Town Reserves got back to winning ways with a 1-0 success at home to FC Chippenham Youth.

Bottom side Westbury United Reserves put their recent woes behind them to claim just a second victory of the season. Jason Edwards’ side were emphatic 9-0 winners at home to Wootton Bassett Town Development.

Malmesbury Victoria moved into the top four by narrowly getting the better of a 5-4 thriller on their trip to Shrewton United.

Corsham Town Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Wilts Calne Town and it was also honours even as Sarum Youth hosted Malmesbury Victoria, with the clash finishing level at 2-2.
