JOHN Fisher is out to upset the bookmakers as Highworth Town bid for a place in the last 32 of the FA Vase.

The Highworth chief takes his troops to Wessex League outfit Blackfield & Langley in tomorrow’s third round clash.

Town have already faced their opponents in the FA Cup this season – returning battered and bruised from Southampton after a 4-0 defeat.

And that has sparked bookies Bet Victor to offer odds of 1-2 for a home victory, with Highworth a 10-3 shot to triumph.

“They are the bookmakers’ favourites. Someone has got odds on the game and we’re the outsiders,” joked Fisher.

“I find all that quite funny at this level of football and it’s just a pity I can’t have a bet on myself.

“They gave us a bit of a hiding earlier in the year so the players couldn’t ask for any more motivation, could they? I wasn’t at the game but apparently we couldn’t have played any worse.

“They are a decent side but we just have to play to our potential.

“We will go there with a stronger squad than when we went down before. As long as we go down there and give a better account of ourselves than we did last time, that’s all I can ask.

“This is the furthest we’ve ever been in the Vase. It’s the last 64 and to get into the last 32 is a nice carrot because that opens it up to a national draw.

“It’s a big game and I’d rather be in this than playing a league game as this proves how well we’ve done this season.”

Highworth head to the south coast in decent form and have lost just once in their last seven matches. Only a late Ascot United equaliser prevented them from making it six wins in that time during Tuesday’s league clash.

Blackfield, meanwhile, were thrashed 4-0 at home by Winchester City in the Hampshire Cup on their last outing on Tuesday.

“We’ve had some good results of late, and even though we drew on Tuesday, I felt like we were the better side,” added Fisher.

“I know they got beat 4-0 in midweek but you can’t read much into that because you don’t know what side they put out as they may have rested people for this game.”

Highworth’s Shaun Carter will miss the match with a knee injury but Bradley Clark is hoping to shake off a similar problem.
