A FRESH-FACED Chippenham Youth side showed bags of potential as they came from behind to beat Westbury United Reserves 6-2.

But it was the worst possible start for Nigel Tripp’s side, who had seven under 18 players amongst their ranks, as they fell a goal behind in the first minute.

The visiting side were soon back level when Alex Pring found Luke Murden, who back-heeled the ball into the net before Ed Sawyer finished off a six man move to put Chippenham 2-1 up at half-time.

Murden got his second of the game from the penalty spot to add to strikes from 16 year-old Jamie Norman, Jamie Morris and Matty Coote.

“We didn’t start off very well and found ourselves 1-0 down within the first minute,” said Tripp.

“Then we gradually got back in to the game and finished it quite well.

“It was a pleasing win and we had a lot of youngsters in the team, which is always good, and hopefully we can get them into the first team.

“In the new year, I hope we can carry on the way we have been going and if we can have something at the end of the season to show for it, then that would be great.”

Trowbridge Wanderers manager John Phillips was left ruing the chances his side missed in the first half as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the league leaders Ludgershall Sports.

Wanderers started the brighter of the two teams but the woodwork twice denied them as they went into half-time goalless before conceding twice in the second half to lose ground in the league.

“We played extremely well in the first half and played some of the best football we have played as a team this season,” said Phillips.

“We really needed to put our chances away in the first half and we were left to rue them.

“In the first half, we hit the crossbar and hit the post, and their keeper made some great saves and we had some really good opportunities.

“I don’t think I would be exaggerating if I said that we should have gone in at half-time 3-0 up but we didn’t it was 0-0 and I had to just tell the players to give more of the same.

“I thought there would be one goal in it and whoever scored the first goal would go on to win the game, and that is what happened.

“It is disappointing to start the new year off with a loss but I’m very pleased with how the first season is going for a new team and I am hoping they will close the gap on the top and continue moving forward.”
