IT WAS a perfect ten for Old Town United as they made light work of Swiss Chalet Rangers in the Swindon and District Premier Division.

It was a weekend marred by waterlogged pitches, as the game at St Joseph’s was the only game to get on out of both divisions.

The school site had not been the original venue for the match but Old Town United manager Dale Bird worked tirelessly to find a suitable pitch after the playing surface at Croft was deemed unplayable.

It was worth the hard work as his side put in a dominant performance to lift them to second in the top division and put their goal difference back to positive figures.

Chris Wood opened the scoring for the home side when he collected a through ball from player-manager Bird, before Shane Dodson put them 2-0 to the good.

In a seemingly comfortable position, Old Town wobbled and conceded a goal from Jason Castle and were fortunate not to slip behind.

The hosts re-grouped and goals from Jack Duffy and James Lewis gave Bird’s side a 4-1 lead at half time.

Things continued to go the way of the home side after the break as Duffy added his second of the game before Bird got on the end of a Wood cross to score.

Wood then got his second of the game, which was followed by a goal from substitute Jamie McCabe before James Lewis and Shane Dodson also added to their earlier strikes.

“Our game was actually called off on Croft, which we found out late Friday and Dale worked hard to get them game on down at St Joseph’s,” said Wood, who has now scored 12 goals from midfield this season.

“We stepped above Spectrum now, which cleared up our game in hand and it was a must-win for us to try and push up the league as far as we can.

“We only have a couple of games left so we need maximum points for the rest of our season.

“We’ve had a few ups and downs this season.

“We had as shocking start but this puts right the Village Inn game, at the beginning of the season, where we lost 11-1.

“The win has put us in a good position for the final part of the season.”
