Having not played for several weeks the Spits got back to winning ways returning home from league-leaders Gloucester City with a 2-1 success.

Gloucester attacked straight from kick-off but good defending by Spits prevented the Tigers pushing forward.

Spits then began to settle and had opportunities of their own to push forward.

With Katie Wadey making some good runs and having several shots on goal only to be outdone by the Gloucester stopper.

The hosts went on the attack but Spits’ keeper Julia Caton closed down the angle well to block the shot.

On 19 minutes Beth Turner poked the ball through to Wadey and as he beared down on goal she was brought down by the Gloucester keeper.

From the resulting free kick, Emma Skinner fired inches over.

On the stroke of half-time, Gloucester take the lead from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Shortly after the interval, the Spitfires drew level when a Sammie Smith free-kick found the head of Morgan Whitaker and she flicked it on to Skinner to net.

Spitfires took the lead five minutes later when Wadey ran on to a lovely through from Skinner to lob the on-rushing Gloucester keeper.

The hosts pushed hard for a leveller but the Spitfires defence stood firm.

Both teams had chances to find the net in the latter stages of the second period but it Spitfires was who were celebrating at the final whistle.
