DAVE Webb has challenged his Swindon Supermarine players to ‘show their worth’ in the final third of the season.

Marine remain languishing in the lower half of the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West table but after Marine notched up their first league win of 2015 with a comfortable 4-1 triumph over Clevedon Town on Saturday, manager Webb’s thoughts immediately turned to issuing his troops a top 10 target.

The South Marston outfit have 13 matches of the campaign left to contend with and the Webb’s Wood Stadium chief says that his team have an obligation to try and produce a positive end to the season.

“There’s some good players at this football club and we want to play in certain way but we are where we are and none of us want to be where we are,” said Webb.

“We’ve got to try and pick up as many league points as we can. I want to try and get a top 10 finish and finish the season well.

“The players are fully aware of what I want, what the club wants, what the chairman wants, and we’re looking for people to show their worth and show that they want to be here next season.

“I know the majority are going to work hard to try and achieve that.”

Marine signalled their intent from the off, with Bradley Gray’s low drive hacked off the line through a combination of keeper Kane Mannings and defender Aron Robbins before Luke Hopper had an effort saved by Mannings.

With eight minutes on the clock, Connor Waldon neatly slid Josh Morse in behind the Clevedon back line but he failed to beat the Seasiders’ goalie.

However, against the run of play, the visitors took the lead just past the 20-minute mark as Joe Swift’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off the Marine wall and looped up into the air before dropping into the far corner, with Omari Sims bundling into the net on the line.

But the home side quickly got themselves back on level terms as Clevedon’s Mannings made a save from a corner but the ball dropped kindly for Ross Adams to nod in at the far post.

The visitors almost restored their lead in the blink of an eye, Swift looping a header onto the crossbar, but with 33 minutes gone, Swindon Town loanee Waldon lit up the afternoon as he blasted an unstoppable drive into the top corner from 25 yards to make it 2-1.

Moments after the break, Hopper spurned the chance to increase the home side’s lead as he fluffed his finish from Waldon’s pass to the far post whilst Waldon himself fired wide after latching on to a stray pass from the Clevedon back line.

But on the hour mark, Hopper made up for his earlier misses as he played a one-two with Josh Morse on the left wing before deftly stroking home past Mannings.

Marine continued to press home the issue and when Waldon got to a through ball ahead of Mannings and was barged over by the Seasiders goalie, Chris Taylor confidently slotted away the resultant penalty.

With just under ten minutes to go, home keeper Sam Warrell pulled off a smart reaction save to keep out Troy Budd before also denying Louis Keane to maintain his team’s advantage.

Boss Webb added: “15th (in the table) is not a place I want to be and not a place all the players want to be, so I asked for a performance.

“I asked for us to dominate. Can we score some goals? – I think we did that.

“We probably should have had a few more but at 4-1, Sam Warrell’s made a couple of saves and they’ve had a chance they should have scored, so all of a sudden, football can change very quickly.

“It was a much better performance from the front two; it starts from there and they were great today, Connor and Luke.”
